Phonics, Reading and Handwriting Schemes

Leeming and Londonderry PS copyright (27)At Leeming and Londonderry Primary School we use a range of schemes to help our children learn.

Phonics

Further details to follow

Spelling

Further up the school children have regular spelling lessons to teach the rules or conventions of spelling. The spelling programme is based around the National Curriculum’s spelling appendix for each year group and children learn, consolidate and extend their knowledge through a range of engaging activities.

Handwriting

The handwriting used at Leeming and Londonderry is based on the Nelson Handwriting Scheme. This scheme ensures the children learn to join their handwriting during Year 1 and have developed their own individual style by the time they leave school in Year 6.

Reading

At Leeming and Londonderry we actively encourage reading for pleasure, as well as using the reading scheme to progress the children’s reading skills. Celebration Assemblies are used to highlight children who have excelled at their reading throughout the previous week. Children are encouraged to share book recommendations and talk about their reading experiences, understanding that their opinions are valued and appreciated.
