Our Curriculum

Music

Mary Poppins 5At The Synergy Schools Federation, our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity, self-expression and encourages our children on their musical journeys.

We hope to foster a lifelong love of music by exposing them to diverse musical experiences which ignite a passion for music. By listening and responding to different musical styles, finding their voices as singers and performers (using both rhythmic and melodic instruments) and as composers, we will enable them to become reflective musicians as well as help them gain in confidence and self-esteem. Our ambitious curriculum also involves the learning of a musical instrument throughout the whole of Key Stage 2 (with a focus on brass instruments) which provides an excellent foundation for pupils' secondary music education.

The aims of our music curriculum marry that of the Department for Education’s Model Music Curriculum (March 2021). In total, pupils will receive well over the suggested 1 hour of musical teaching per week, spread across the whole academic year. This tuition will take the form of the following activities:

  • In Key Stage 1, 3 highly focused and taught units of work taken from the Charanga scheme of work which develop pupils’ understanding of the 7 elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, texture and form) and their ability to listen, appraise, perform and compose.
  • In Key Stage 2, 2 highly focused and taught units of work taken from the Charanga scheme of work which develop pupils’ understanding of the 7 elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, texture and form) and their ability to listen, appraise, perform and compose.
  • In Key Stage 2, a programme of brass tuition will be provided to teach pupils throughout Years 3-6 how to read stave notation, play and perform using this family of instruments. This will be provided in partnership with the North Yorkshire Music Hub to take advantage of the Wider Opportunities Fund for class music instrumental lessons.
  • Throughout all year groups, a planned programme of musical listening and appraisal will be delivered, using the Model Music Curriculum as inspiration and guide. These experiences will be provided at the start of collective worship and during lesson times at teachers’ discretion.
  • For all year groups, a weekly planned Key Stage singing session will be taught.
  • For Key Stage 2 pupils, an additional opportunity to perform on stage will be provided during the summer terms, utilising and further developing their confidence in musical performance.

Synergy Schools is a federation of primary schools in the north of North Yorkshire. The federation was formed in September 2018 when Brompton-on-Swale and Crakehall Church of England Primary Schools successfully shared senior leadership capacity. In July 2021, the federation welcomed Leeming & Londonderry Community Primary and Pickhill Church of England Primary school into the federation.
